Calculate Population on a Map

Use our population discovery map to estimate how many people live in any area of the world. This interactive mapping tool allows you to draw a custom area or radius on the map and instantly view the estimated population within the selected region.

To begin, simply search, zoom, or pan to find your location of interest using the map controls. Once you've located your area, choose one of the two available drawing tools located above the map. Polygon Tool – Click multiple points on the map to define the boundaries of a custom-shaped area. Radius Tool – Click and drag to draw a circular area that you can move, expand, or shrink as needed.

Once your area is drawn, the tool will automatically calculate and display the estimated population. Note: Calculations for larger areas may take a few moments to complete, depending on the complexity and size of the selection.

    FAQs

How accurate are the population estimates provided by the tool?
The population estimates are based on the 2030 Global Human Settlement Layer (GHSL), a reliable and up-to-date dataset that models global population distribution. While highly accurate for general planning and analysis, estimates may vary slightly depending on the resolution and scope of the selected area.
What’s the difference between the Polygon Tool and the Radius Tool?
The Polygon Tool lets you draw a custom-shaped area by clicking multiple points to define its boundary—ideal for following irregular shapes like city limits or coastlines. The Radius Tool creates a circular area that you can resize and move—useful for quick assessments based on distance from a central point.
Why does it take longer to calculate the population for some areas?
Calculations may take more time for larger or more complex shapes, especially when using the Polygon Tool. This is because the tool needs to process a higher volume of data points to generate an accurate estimate. Please allow a few moments for the results to appear in such cases.
